Five months old! [Jun. 10th, 2008|02:46 pm]
[Tags|]

Evander is five months old now! We've noticed that he's crossed the line from infant to baby... less of a pet and more of a person! His personality is starting to show. It's fun when that happens!

He is a very happy kid! He will always smile, and giggles a lot, especially when someone is looking at him.

He's very wiggly, and does a really great job of getting from here to there, with his limited range of physical control.

Speaking of physical control, he is really getting into using his hands to get what he wants. He always grabs my face and my glasses, and puts his hand in my mouth. His hands are constantly reaching out for everything they can get.

His hair is still really short and sparse, but it looks like it's pretty blonde.

He loves to play with his toes. If he's upset, 90% of the time, releasing his toes from his jammies so he can play with them will cheer him up.

He rolls over a lot, and does really well on his tummy. He hasn't rolled from tummy to back since that day I posted about it, so I guess it was a fluke.

He has been sleeping through the night for the past week or two (hallelujah!). He wakes up in the morning happy, and likes to gurgle and sing.

I haven't fed him a lot of solid food during the past month, but I have been sharing my food with him (when applicable) for the past few days. He has tried refried beans, oatmeal, and cream of tomato soup. He really digs the soup! He has also licked some other things that aren't soft enough for him to actually eat (sherbet, a tortilla chip, a carrot). He seems pretty interested in what we are eating, and is really into it when we share, so I guess those are some cues that he's ready to eat solids.

He's getting big and heavy!

He travels well. He rarely fusses when we're driving in the car, and he likes going out in public.

Happy five months, Evander! You're a fun little guy!

Easter Eggies [Mar. 29th, 2008|12:05 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

  • Excuse the weird formatting, I don't feel like fixing it.

My mom posted some cute easter egg hunt photos on her blog. I didn't take any photos with my camera, so I stole hers, heh heh.

We did some simple egg coloring this year, but first Lewis colored on the eggs with crayons... washable crayons. Now normally, I am a HUGE fan of the Crayola washable series of supplies, but in the case of colored eggs, the washable crayons don't work well. For one thing, the wax kind of comes off when you dye the eggs, and for another thing, the wax that doesn't come off in the dying process comes off on your hands when you handle the eggs. The eggs still taste the same when you eat them, though!

We couldn't do our egg hunt on Easter because Lewis was SICK and recovering from a big trip with Grandma. I wanted to let him relax for a few days, so we did the hunt on Wednesday.

He had fun finding "eggies," and he did a pretty good job collecting them! We hid about 25, and he found 10 of them before he got distracted. I think that's pretty good for a 1 year-old! He started to collect them with the egg carton, but it was too unwieldy, so he went into the kitchen and found a bowl. When the bowl got filled up with eggs, he returned to the kitchen and got a HUGE casserole dish (the kind that weighs about 5 lbs) AND its lid. Ha ha ha!

Do we look like twins in this picture??  :)

I don't have photos, but one of my mom's traditional Easter treats for us are chocolate easter nests. I made some this year. They're super easy! Just melt some chocolate (I used semisweet chocolate chips) in the microwave, and then mix in shredded coconut. Drop the mixture by spoonfuls (like cookies) onto wax paper (or aluminum foil, cookie sheet, whatever you have), and then top with "eggs" (jelly beans, or your favorite egg-shaped candies) and bunnies or chicks, if you have them. My favorite Easter jelly beans are Jolly Rancher beans! Yum! Our Target was PICKED OVER the day before Easter (that's what happens when you live in a small town), and there were no Whoppers eggs, Peeps, or pretty much any of my other traditional favorite Easter basket fillers. I got the boys each a tiny 50 cent Easter bunny (they didn't have any regular small Easter bunnies, either! All they had were the expensive ones left - Dove bar Easter bunnies, etc.) and a plastic Jelly Belly egg (I thought Lewis w ould like the little lever you use to get beans out of the egg). That's it! Small Easter basket fillers for small boys! Of course, Lewis will likely get to eat Evander's candy anyway!

I love being a mom and doing fun stuff! :) I think it's more fun than being a kid and doing it! Ha ha!

Austria gparents visit [Feb. 5th, 2008|01:47 pm]
Here are some photos of the visit with Mommie-Grammie and Popi.

Yay for kisses! Lewis doesn't just automatically give them out, so you know he liked these people!

While they were here, it snowed! We saw the biggest snowflakes we have ever seen. They must have been two inches across, and they covered the ground in about an inch of snow in an hour. Amazing!

Lewis got to go out for a walk in the snow the next day (everything was mostly melted. He ate some snow, and threw snowballs into puddles! While it was snowing, his dad was at the store, and found some rubber boots for Lewis, just in time! Lewis loves his boots and has been wearing them almost constantly since he got them. I personally love how they turn any outfit into a swashbuckling outfit.

Here's another photo with the boots, only this outfit kind of looks like a Canadian Mountie outfit... Grandma Wanda, here's the sweater you made for Lewis! It fits great, and isn't it cute?

Mmm, breakfast! [Feb. 5th, 2008|01:45 pm]
Lewis had oatmeal for breakfast today. This picture cracks me up. I'm so glad I caught it on camera.

So, toddlers and eating. Lewis has always been a fairly good eater. He will eat a pretty big range of food. We've been feeding him modified versions of what we eat at meals for a long time, now. However, now having entered toddlerhood, sometimes it's more of a challenge to get Lewis to eat.

Part of the issue is that he LOVES to drink things. He asks for tea, milk, and "lemon" (Crystal Lite) all the time. If those requests go unanswered, he'll claim he wants to go to bed and have a bottle. If he drinks too much before mealtime, his appetite is curbed, and he won't want to eat.

One thing that kind of works is "dip dips" (that's what he calls it anytime there is any kind of dip, accompanied by a dipping motion like that of dipping a teabag in a mug). Of course, he often just licks up the dip, whatever it is, and leaves the dippable item unconsumed (but licked clean of dip, many times). If the dip is nutritious (like today's oatmeal, he used to dip apples), then great, but if it's ketchup, then not so great.

Foods Lewis likes are burritos ("beetos"), noodles/pasta of any kind ("nooni"), peanut butter and jelly (no word for this, because he doesn't eat it very often), cheese, eggs ("ay-dees"), and anything drinkable.

The internet, in its vast and infinite information and wisdom (read: I forgot what site I read this on), has suggested that as long as your toddler is eating a meal a day, and has energy, and many wet/dirty diapers a day, he's getting enough to eat, and enough nutrition. Lewis does actually eat real food (at least one good meal a day), so I'm not worried. I just try to make sure he is in his chair with food in front of him three times a day.

Lewis on the Playground [Nov. 12th, 2007|04:54 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Lewis loves going to the playground. These pictures are of the first day he went down the slide.

Whee!

It's easier to visit the playground now that he's steadier on his feet! The first many times he went, he couldn't even walk yet! He especially likes slides, steering wheel type things, and suspension bridges. He isn't so hot on swings anymore. He doesn't like to be confined in the baby swings, it seems.

Lewis the Knight [Oct. 22nd, 2007|12:40 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

My mom bought several costume patterns a few months ago when patterns were on sale at JoAnn's. We dug them out last week, and I looked at all the options. I decided that while the cowboy costume was cute (it has a full-length duster!), it wouldn't really work for a 15 month-old, so I opted for a second choice: the Knight.

We surveyed our available materials, and everything we used in this costume was found in my mom's stash! Amazing! We went with moss green stretch velvet for the hood, muslin for the tunic, purple "dagging" (that's our vocab word for the week - it's the squarish-trim stuff on the sleeves and bottom hem of the tunic), a purple lion applique, and gold lame belt and leg-coverings (faux armor). I was concerned that the purple with gold lame would be too Easter pageant, but it turns out my fears were unfounded, as everything came together and looked awesome! My mom even found the gold braid in her stash and it perfectly went with the purple accents of the outfit.

The costume was simple, but had a lot of little pieces that made it more detailed than I thought it would. Working together was a great idea, though, because one of us pinned and assembled while the other one sewed, so it only took us an afternoon.

Anyway, it looks even cuter in person. Of course. :)

Saving the Planet, Sewing, AND Partying! [Oct. 8th, 2007|09:52 am]
[Tags|, ]

I'm hosting a Morsbag-making party at the CROQ Office on Oct. 17th from 7-9pm.

What's a Morsbag? Check morsbags.com for more info, but basically, it's a handmade cloth shopping bag (made from recycled fabric). Morsbaggers make a slew of the bags and then GIVE them away to unsuspecting shoppers - all with the goal of eliminating some of the 1 MILLION plastic bags consumed over the globe per MINUTE!!

We're just going to be doing the sewing/construction part at this party - and it's our first Portland event.

If you check the Morsbags website, I guarantee you'll be intrigued. Email me for the office address if you'd like to be a part!

Okay, it's been AWHILE! [Sep. 25th, 2007|04:24 pm]

My Class on Crafting for Cash & Community

So, I taught that class last weekend.

I haven't done any "public speaking" in awhile - maybe since college. At least, the kind where you have to prepare and stuff.

It went really well, though. I wasn't nervous AT ALL. Not for one minute, which is awesome. I don't know why I wasn't nervous but it could be one or a combination of the following reasons:

  • I'm older now
  • I was really prepared
  • I know my topic really well, even without preparation
  • I could talk about my topic for an hour with anyone who cared to listen
Anyway, for whatever reason, I wasn't nervous at all, and it went really well, which is great. I brought little packets of goodies for a craft project (I think I wrote about it before, but you probably don't remember what the project was). The packet had strong magnets, pin backs, and thumbtacks in it along with a bunch of vintage jewelry parts, paper, novelty fiber, and other goodies (and glue, and scissors). The participants were just supposed to make cool magnets, pins, and thumbtacks using the materials. I figured it would be an easy project to do while they listened.

It seems like only two or three of the ladies actually made stuff, and the rest listened. I don't know if it's because my topic was so informative (ha ha! it was, but ha ha), or if they didn't like the project (or their particular baggies of goodies), or what. I'm not too worried about it, though. I just wanted to have the project for their entertainment so they wouldn't have to just listen to me.

I WAS going to do a powerpoint presentation, but I changed my mind and just made a zine with all my notes in it instead. I figure powerpoint presentations are overrated as presentation tools, anyway, and more often than not, they're just boring. The zine also had an "about me" page with an excerpt of an interview I did with the Adorn magazine blog, and an essay I wrote about "getting rich quick between the ages of 7 and 12", and another general crafting article.

My presentation: I talked quickly (probably too quickly) because I had a ton of material to cover. I finished at just about exactly the time I needed to, so that was good. I feel like the session would be really useful for someone who makes stuff and wants to start selling it. It seemed like some ladies were really into the topic. For others, it seems like they might just be hobby crafters who aren't interested in selling. Also, a lot of my info was centered around the internet, and the crowd was decidedly older than 55 (mostly... there were a few 20-50s), so maybe selling online isn't really something they are interested in doing.

I was happy with the outcome, though. A few ladies told me it was really informative. Hopefully it was useful to some.

Lewis Update [Aug. 10th, 2007|02:32 pm]
[Tags|, ]

So I finally got a couple of pics of Lewis on my computer. Here he is wearing the kimono outfit I told you about in my last entry, that he got for his birthday from his Auntie Ana. The top photo is pretty serious-looking!

This photo isn't so serious. He's sitting on the little train scooter his Grandma & Grandpa V. got him for his birthday and clapping. You can see the outfit a little better here, too.

Since his first birthday, it seems like he has been learning a couple new words a day, and he imitates words and gestures a lot now.

Definitely words (frequently used) New words in bold:
Dada
Mama
Hi (sounds like "hah")
Uh-Oh (the newest one, used all the time)
Up ("ub")
Ball (sounds like "baa")
Water (sounds like "wawa" or "a-wawa")

Ha-ha! (fake laugh)
Boat (B words sound a lot alike, but are obvious in context)
Bird

Bath
Hallelujah (Yes, he actually says this. He learned it when Auntie Shannie sang the song "Hallelujah" to him, and
he started joining in. Most frequently sounds like Aa-oooh, but sometimes Aa-oooh-ah, and once, actually had four syllables, and sounded like Hah-ah-ooh-ah. But only once. Today he was in the car singing, and I realized he was singing "Aa-ooh," so probably trying to sing the song Shannon taught him.)
Hot ("haa," used in context if there is something hot nearby, also used it at the beach when he saw the ocean. Maybe because he uses it when he sees boiling water?)
No ("no-no")
Bottle ("baba")
Uh-huh (as in "yes")
Baby ("ba-ba" - usually when seeing pictures of himself)
Ow (usually whispers this. I noticed that if I say "ow!" I usually whisper it, so that's probably where he got the whispering trick)

He went on a hike with his dad a couple weeks ago and rode in the baby backpack. I wasn't there, but I heard he did great. He rode facing outward, too, and fell asleep that way.

He liked the part where they stopped at the river and played on the rocks.

New Tricks/Skills:
Puts finger in mouth and "pops" it out (no popping, though)
Fish lips
Climbs up on surfaces that are about waist-high (coffeetables, etc.)
Imitates actions & facial expressions a lot

He's still crawling, and not trying to stand by himself or walk. He's a cautious kid. I don't think he wants to fall down. If you distract him while he's standing up (by putting something he wants in both hands, for instance), he will stand there for a few seconds, and then when he realizes that he's standing up, he gets that look on his face that you see on Looney Tunes characters when they realize they ran over the edge of a precipice, and they're running along in the air. Then he sits down.

I hardly ever put shoes on him, because even with good shoes and double knots, they usually don't stay on. Today I put a pair on him that stayed on for about 45 minutes, but were removed once we were in the car. He even got one shoelace all the
way out of the shoe!

He loves to take baths, and has learned how to drink out of the faucet.

He "brushes" his teeth with his little toothbrush - especially if someone else is brushing their teeth.

He tries to put hats and glasses on, usually getting glasses on his neck.

Netflix Queue Random [Aug. 8th, 2007|12:30 am]
[Tags|, ]

Back in the late 90s, our local mom & pop (minus the pop) video store had this deal where you could rent four movies for four days for four bucks. New releases were not included. We liked to watch movies, so we usually went through at least two movies a day, if not all four. We saw a lot of random movies, a few classics, and some hidden gems (this is how we discovered Bottle Rocket. And that's the only one I can think of...)

Our Netflix queue has been at least 100 long since we started renting with them, and I haven't been tending the order of the queue closely, so recently, we've received a whole bunch of random movies on our list. This current random movie-watching reminds me of those old 4-4-4 days, as we have watched some pretty disparate titles. However, we don't usually do four or even two a day, these days! (Note, it's not correct to start a sentence with "however" but oh well!)

Movies I've seen lately from my random Netflix queue:
Basquiat (I liked it! The acting was outstanding)
The Fountain (Less trippy than I expected, still pretty slow)
Accepted (Funnier than I expected - Justing Long is awesome!)
Apocalypto (Mel Gibson-directed gorefest... pretty boring)
My Super Ex-Girlfriend (horrible! who was this movie made for? And why is Luke Wilson in so many stink-fests?)
Candy (depressing drug movie with good acting)
Blood Diamond (too preachy/hit you over the head with the issues, but the first role where I thought DiCaprio pulled off being an adult)
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (forgettable, but it's always great to see Robert Downey Jr in something)
The Good German (I like seeing what rules Steven Soderbergh will come up with to make his films - this one used only lenses that would have been available in 1945 and all incandescent lighting, it was a decent Film Noir)
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (Cute and entertaining, but I fell asleep halfway through)
Babel (Yuck. I don't like aimless movies. Sorry pseudo-intellectuals and film snobs!)
